A clearer way to shop

The buyer's guide

Choose the car first. Get the whole price in writing. Take time to compare.

  1. Decide new, used or certified pre-owned

New comes with a factory warranty and current features; confirm the coverage for the exact car. Used can cost less up front, but check its history and condition. Certified pre-owned is a used car that passed the manufacturer’s inspection and comes with extra warranty coverage. Ask for the certification paperwork and coverage terms.

  2. Pick the model and trim before you talk price

List your must-have features. Then find the lowest trim that has them. Confirm the exact car has the options you need.

  3. Ask every dealer for a written out-the-door price

Ask for the vehicle price, dealer fees, add-ons, taxes, title and registration, all itemized. Get the quote for the exact vehicle you would buy.

  4. Compare quotes line by line

Compare the same model, trim, options and condition. Look at the full total before comparing monthly payments.

  5. Sort out financing before you sign

Get a pre-approval from your bank or credit union. Compare APR, term and total cost. Dealer financing and manufacturer offers can be good, but compare the total. For current offers, check the manufacturer’s official site and ask for the offer in writing.

  6. Treat your trade as a separate deal

Get your trade-in value from more than one place. Keep the purchase price, trade value and financing separate so you can see each part of the deal.

  7. Test drive the exact car and check it before signing

Make sure the VIN matches the paperwork. Review the car’s condition and the final agreement. Check that there are no add-ons you did not agree to.
